TOURNEY JOURNAL 2001

AKA How'd We Do Again?
Where I try to recount as best I can our triumphs & our clubbings in chronological order. If I forgot anything important I'm sorry. It's possible I was drunk at the time.

Tu B'Shvat, Portland OR, January 27, 2001
This was our inaugural tourney, where we brandished our new team and our new team uniforms for the first time. Had a tough time warming up (& showing up) until the second or third game, but in the end I think we had the best score in the tournament against the undefeated team VJJim, only losing by 3 points, and we capped the day with a rallying victory over Thermos Nation.

Onionfest, Walla Walla, March 31-April 1, 2001
Our first two-day tournament! What an awesome time! I'm so proud of what we accomplished & of what we learned as a group. Zone defense? Bring it on.

We won the first point of the tournament with a boat race against the soon-to-be-Onionfest-champs Northfield Allstars, and later ended up getting 4 more points on them, though you'd really have to believe they were taking it easy on us. I can't believe they rolled into the finals Sunday with only 2 extra men & 2 extra women and beat the monstrous Missoula team. That's incredible conditioning.

We lost to the Whitman A team (they fielded two more full teams & still had probably 30 people on the A team) and Vincelot Link (the 20-seed at Regionals last year) by pretty heavy margins, but once we got our bye in we felt a lot better. It was our first chance of the day to get out of the rain & really get some beer in our bellies. We capped the afternoon with a morale-boosting victory over Desert Lorax, the high-spirited tri-cities team, and prepped ourselves for the evening festivities. Must've been the brownies.

The party was a lot of fun. They served great Indian food and had a band that busted out a version of the JB's "Pass the Peas" that brought the house down. If only they hadn't run out of beer at 10 o'clock. We won the party with the best non-Whittie attendance at the end. Clean-up crews don't count, y'all.

Sunday morning was cold as heck & windy as hell. We were seeded 15th & faced the 14th-seeded Deernuts. It was all down-wind points until the Deernuts managed an upwinder with the help of their crafty female handler with the broken toe. The Deernuts led 5-3 with only 10 minutes remaining on the hard cap & we were nearly doomed, but we managed to get settled enough for our offense to click. I don't remember exactly how it all happened, but we scored a downwinder, then managed to stop them from going downwind on us, & got our first upwind goal, tying the game at cap time. The tie-breaker was to our advantage this time, because even though they were receiving, we had the wind at our backs. Stopped 'em on defense & put 'em away 8-7.

Last game was against Vincelot Link, and although they beat us again, I think we all played so much better than the day before, & felt the game was closer than the score indicated.

Finished 4th out of 10!
Potlatch, Redmond, WA, July 7-8, 2001
Our gift at our first-ever Potlatch tournament was a lascivious peep show added with mix CDs that were created with the input of all our team members. I can't wait to see what we come up with next year. What will people remember the most? Will it be Mike trying to climb the rafters at the dance, the mysterious person wandering around in the gorilla suit, or the generous display of beautiful body parts (& Matt's thingy)?

What impressed me most about our team was our ability to get hot when we really needed to. We were down to the Sneetches 7-4 at the half when Linus gave an amazing pep talk that sent us on a 9-point run to close out 13-7. And on Sunday, just when Westward Ho! had mounted a comeback to even the score at 5-5, we again launched a streak of 8 points to finish the game at 13-5. Or there was the time we were down 12-0 and managed to step it up to score two points before the end. The heart on this team just stuns me sometimes.

We lost 3 games by just two points this weekend, and if we can stay that close to that many teams eventually I think we'll start winning those games too.

Kleinman Eruption, Vancouver WA, August 11-12, 2001
It was an interesting format at this year's Kleinman, with 2 pools of 7 teams playing in the coed division. The top 12 were to be seeded and placed into 3 pools for Sunday's competition.

We went 3-for-6 Saturday, beating a team that later ended up in Sunday's A Pool (Seeds 1 through 4), but our loss to Eugene's Runs With Scissors somehow dropped us into the C Pool as the number 1 seed (9th out of 14 overall).

With one of the C Pool teams quitting and Skin & Bones dropping due to injuries, our game against the 4th-seeded Ruach suddenly became the finals, and it was certainly a game worthy of that title. They started the game with a 4-0 run, and soon stretched it to 7-2, but we were patient and eventually turned the game around, coming back to win it 15-12.

BOOT OVER RUACH 15-12

Spawnfest, Burlington WA, August 25-26, 2001
Had an incredible start this weekend, with a wickedly chilly offense that ran the field with ease right from the get-go. At 3-1 in our pool going into Sunday morning we had a chance to finish pool play 4-1 and get into the A-Pool and a guaranteed 8th place finish by beating Bumper Car Bubba, but missed it by just two points.

UPA Sectionals, Corvallis OR, September 22-23, 2001
Well, I think we can officially consider what we've got going on with Bones a hometown rivalry. Lost to them in our very first game as a team (if you can count that -- we had a lot of random pick-ups on that squad), then we beat them in Corvallis. They finished higher than us at Potlatch, we finished higher at Kleinman, then they finished higher at Spawnfest. Beat them in pool play Saturday and then lost to them in the backdoor game to get to Regionals.

I think everyone on our team is proud of our effort. With the huge effort we gave trying to upset the 2nd place team (& losing by just two points), it's amazing we were able to keep the backdoor game against Bones close.
